Free Eye Exams at ‘PENTAGRAM’ Eye Hospital for World Glaucoma Week

On the occasion of World Glaucoma Prevention Week, from March 9 to 13 2026, (inclusive,), between 2:00 PM and 6:00 PM, free eye examinations will be conducted at the ophthalmology offices of the Specialized Eye Hospital “PENTAGRAM” (Sofia, Dimitar Petkov St. 11).

The free examinations will include:

• Free intraocular pressure measurement
• Detailed examination of the retina
• Visual acuity measurement

If necessary (at an additional cost), Optical coherence tomography (OCT) – a high-tech, non-invasive eye examination of the retina and the optic nerve. It is particularly recommended as a preventive measure for diabetics and for people over 40 years of age who have a family history of glaucoma.

Glaucoma is a group of degenerative diseases united by one common feature – progressive and typical damage to the optic nerve and visual field. In glaucoma, the optic nerve is damaged due to high pressure. This is caused by an excessive amount of intraocular fluid in the front part of the eye, whose gradual accumulation leads to increased intraocular pressure. Therefore, measuring this parameter is one of the first indicators that ophthalmologists monitor when it comes to this insidious disease.

Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness worldwide after cataracts. “It is said about this condition that what it takes – it does not return, i.e., the vision loss caused by glaucoma is irreversible. Medicine can help stop the process from the moment of diagnosis, but it cannot restore lost vision,” explains the manager of the Specialized Eye Hospital “Pentagram” and one of the most experienced eye surgeons in our country – Dr. Veselin Daskalov.

That is why it is very important, even without any complaints related to the eyes, after the age of 40, a person should go for a preventive eye examination once a year. In case of symptoms, these visits should be more frequent.

Risk factors for glaucoma

• Age over 50 years
• Increased intraocular pressure
• Family history (a first-degree relative – mother/father/brother/sister, with this condition)
• Myopia
• Vascular diseases (arterial hypertension)
• Diabetes

Treatment of glaucoma
The treatment of glaucoma it can be medicated, and in more severe cases, surgery is required, which is routinely performed at the Eye Hospital ‘PENTAGRAM’.
